Course description

These new format events will support staff who work directly with families to be more confident and capable when holding difficult conversations. 

Participants will be introduced to a new set of practice principles that have been designed by East Sussex practitioners and consider how to integrate holding difficult conversations with families with Solution Focus and Motivational Interviewing techniques.

Training objectives

The training objectives for this course are for participants to:

Explore principles on Holding difficult Conversations with Families.

Consider how to integrate holding difficult conversations with families with Solution Focus and Motivational Interviewing techniques.

Reflect on the “contract” between practitioners and service users, to include managing difference. 

Explore communication skills – how are we when in conflict and ideas for maintaining a resilient, empathetic, clear approach?

Practice techniques for responding to difficult conversations to include:

  • self-talk and “convenient beliefs” for keeping calm and focus on successful outcomes under stress

  • giving bad news using danger/worry statements

  • learn about mediation techniques such as speaking to people’s needs rather than their positions

  • practice  Non-Violent communication techniques for maintaining relationships in conflict.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will have:

1. Built confidence in dealing with difficult conversations.

2. Understood how to look after self in relation to such difficult work.

3. Developed skills in describing concerns with families.

4. Enhanced ability to respond to challenging behaviour.

5. Understood further how to deal with forceful counter arguments and disguised compliance.

Additional Information

It is helpful for participants to have completed the 2 day foundation course professional level workshop in Motivational Interviewing prior to
attending this course.

Refreshments will be available with this workshop, however lunch is not provided.
