Course description

The term Gypsy, Roma and Traveller is a collective term used to describe a wide variety of cultural and ethnic groups. There are many ways in which ethnicity may be established: these include language, nomadic way of life, and crucially, self-identification. Defining a person as a Gypsy, Roma or Traveller is a matter of self-ascription and does not exclude those who are living in houses. Ethnic identity is not lost when members of the communities settle, but it continues and adapts to the new circumstances.


Important note: It is essential that you have completed the Safeguarding Children eLearning and the pre-course learning, prior to coming on this course (see additional information under full details), or you may be turned away. 


Training objectives

This session will help participants to gain a better understanding of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) culture. By the end of the course professionals should be able to engage positively and more confidently with the GRT community in order to build better relationships and improve connective practice. This will include information and guidance, and identify sources of support within the department to help improve understanding of the specific needs of GRT families. It will include strategies to use to improve involvement in services, in order to improve outcomes for this group of people.


Learning outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

 ·know what GRT means and how the 2010 Equality Act applies to the community

 ·understand the cultural heritage of the communities

 ·know which GRT groups feature across East Sussex and where they might be located

 ·consider statistical information on GRT health, mortality etc.

 · consider how cultural identity is expressed in GRT families - a focus on issues relevant to safeguarding i.e.engagement, trust, strong gender  roles and sexuality

 ·be able to develop trusting relationships to improve connective practice, understanding why this may need to be adjusted when weaknesses and vulnerabilities are taken into account

 · know and celebrate the strengths of the GRT community

 · be able to apply the assessment triangle effectively to the specific characteristics of GRT families

 · know how to develop robust safety plans

 · know where to get further support and advice.

Preparation and Follow Up
Before attending any LSCB training course, participants must attend a Basic Signs and Indicators Child Protection course provided/commissioned by their own organisation or have accessed the Safeguarding Children online e-learning training course. To complete this course go to the e-learning section on the East Sussex Learning Portal, enter the Children’s Workforce channel and click Safeguarding.
