Course description

This course aims to challenge professional thinking, values and beliefs that exist around safeguarding children with additional needs. To understand the risks and indicators associated with safeguarding children with additional needs.

Important note: It is essential that you have completed the Safeguarding Children eLearning and the pre-course reading, prior to coming on this course (see additional information under full details), or you may be turned away.


Training objectives


Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • understand the relevant legislation, research, guidance and local policies in respect of safeguarding children and young people with special educational needs and disability

  • recognise the barriers and complexities regarding communication in working with children with additional needs

  • identify additional risks and indicators associated with safeguarding children with additional needs.

Preparation and Follow Up
Before attending any LSCB training course, participants must have attended a Basic Signs and Indicators Child Protection course provided/commissioned by their own organisation or have accessed the Safeguarding Children online e-learning training course. To complete this course go to the e-learning section on the East Sussex Learning Portal, enter the Children’s Workforce channel and click Safeguarding.

Before attending the course participants are expected to have read the following:

  •  ‘We have the right to be safe’ – NSPCC
  •  Unprotected, Overprotected Report
