Course description

This course provides participants with the knowledge that will enable them to identify signs and indicators of abuse and their responsibilities in terms of responding to and highlighting any concerns, appropriately using East Sussex County Council procedures. It will also discuss the wider safeguarding role and discuss how to identify children and families who require an Early Help Plan and where to get the appropriate help and advice.

Please find attached the Continuum of Need and indicators and information on the Prevent Duty and British Values. These will be referred to during the training so please familiarise yourself with these.

This course is NOT suitable for Registered Childminders and Designated Safeguarding Leads. Please attend either the "Designated Safeguarding Leads Training for Childcare Settings - initial Training" or "Designated Safeguarding Leads Training for Childcare Settings – Refresher training" as applicable. See attached Guidance document for further information.

Training objectives

  • The signs and indicators of child abuse and any action practitioners should take.

  • Understanding of the context in which abuse may occur.

  • The various symptoms, indicators and risk factors associated with actual or potential abuse.

  • Current legislation and guidance and how it relates to the safety and welfare of children and young people.

  • Clarity of constraints and requirements around the levels of statutory intervention with children and their families.

  • Insight into the process of multi-agency involvement in the safeguarding of children and young people.

  • How their role fits into the East Sussex safeguarding process, including the process staff members should follow if they have a concern which they have escalated to the settings Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), however they do not feel that the DSL is taking appropriate action.

  • The requirement for good observation and record keeping within their role.

  • Relationships with parents.

  • Whistleblowing.

Target Audience
This course is for practitioners who deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) who work in;

  • Registered, Private Voluntary or Independent Childcare Settings or work in registered childcare provision within children's centres.
  • Maintained nursery classes, staff however must still attend the whole school training organised by the school.

All registered Childminders and Designated Safeguarding leads must attend the Designated Safeguarding Leads Training for Childcare Settings - initial training or Designated Safeguarding Leads Training for Childcare Settings – Refresher training. For more clarity on what training individuals should attend please see the document attached to this course.
