This course will update the knowledge of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), including childminders, with the aim of renewing their DSL certificate (valid for 2 years). The course will facilitate achieving excellence in Child Protection and Safeguarding by giving tools to embed this into an organisation’s culture.

Please ensure that you are familiar with the course materials attached to your booking confirmation before the course.

There is an expectation that as the DSL you know the signs, indicators and pre-disposing risk factors of abuse. If you are unsure of these please ensure you access the online safeguarding children and young people course before you attend this training. You can access this training by clicking on the Elearning tab at the top of this page.

• A recap on understanding of the signs and indicators of child abuse and any action practitioners should take, the context in which abuse may occur and the various symptoms, indicators and risk factors associated with actual or potential abuse.


• What has arisen for you over the last 2 years including Serious Case Reviews - lessons learnt.


• Current legislation and guidance and how it relates to the safety and welfare of children and young people – highlighting any changes in the last 18 months or any changes that are due to be implemented soon.


• Pan-Sussex Child Protection and Safeguarding procedures and Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Compliance.


• Inter-agency working and Thresholds for Intervention, including Early Help.


• Effective referrals, including what information is required to support an effective referral and how to present it.


• Attendance at Child Protection Conferences.


• The role and responsibilities of DSLs.


• Interactions with parents.


• Allegations against staff, including whistleblowing.


• The relevance of attachment within child protection and its impact on children


• Outside factors which settings need to be aware of


• Disguised compliance within the context of child protection

This training will be delivered via Zoom. Joining instructions with a link to this meeting will be sent near to the training date.

Please ensure you are logged in and ready to go at least 15 minutes before the start of the course so you allow some time for you to resolve any technical issues, as we are unable to provide assistance on the day.

Target Audience

All DSL’s that completed either the EYFS : Designated Safeguarding Leads Training for Childcare Settings – initial training or EYFS : Designated Safeguarding Leads Training for Childcare Settings - Refresher Training within the last 2 years. This Includes;

• Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL’s) who deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in Ofsted registered private, voluntary or independent childcare settings.
• Ofsted registered childminders and childminders registered with an Ofsted registered childminding agency.
• Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) working in a nursery that is managed by or is part of a maintained, academy or independent school. Please note, the school DSL is accountable for the nursery provision that is managed by or part of a school and DDSL’s will still need to be aware of school safeguarding procedures.
