This webinar aims to support teachers to make effective and accurate ongoing assessments of writing in Key Stage 1.


We will unpick the framework statements in detail and explore how to look for, and record, evidence of the statements in pupil work, and share best practice approaches to gathering evidence.


We will also be exploring how to identify and address gaps, and providing strategies for moving pupils forward in their writing, ensuring the best possible outcomes.


NOTE: this webinar is suitable for both year 1 and year 2 teachers and is suitable for all levels of experience. Year 3 teachers may also find it useful.

Training objectives

  • To clarify the expectations regarding statutory assessment of writing for the end of Key Stage 1 in 2020/21.

  • To support teachers to apply the teacher assessment frameworks for writing accurately.

  • To support teachers to make accurate in-year assessments that clearly identify gaps and next steps.

  • To ensure that all teachers within the key stage have a good understanding of the end of Key Stage 1 requirements.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will:



  • understand your responsibilities with regard to statutory assessment of writing for KS1.

  • understand how to prepare your pupils effectively for writing assessments throughout KS1.

  • have a range of strategies and approaches to employ in order to ensure the best writing outcomes for all your pupils.

Additional Information

The session will be led by Pauline Gibbs, with support from Suzy Heritage. Pauline is a highly knowledgeable primary teacher and education consultant with over 30 years of experience. She currently teaches part time in local schools, as well as working as a school improvement consultant with a particular interest in children’s writing. She is also an established county moderator.
Suzy Heritage is the local authority lead for KS1&2 assessment and moderation.
