PRICE - Protecting Rights In a Caring Environment

This course is for the Bungalow staff only

1 day Refresher Course


Training objectives

To refresh and update understanding of how positive behaviour support is used to reduce the use of restrictive practice

  • De-escalation and diffusion strategies

  • Current law and guidance in relation to the use of physical intervention in children and young people's services

  • Refresh practice in PRICE restrictive physical restraint to manage crisis as a last resort.



Learning outcomes

  • To give an understanding of the values that underpin inclusive, person centred behaviour support

  • The importance of reducing all forms of restrictive practice and promoting wellbeing

  • An understanding of the differences between escorting, touching and holding an individual

  • An understanding of primary, secondary and reactive strategies and how to debrief and restore the environment.

This course is for the Bungalow staff only


Please be aware that this course involves close physical contact.

The safety guidance is extensive – but please be aware of the below:

• The course is shorter than previous years to reduce the time we are together and to fit around care home client needs, 09:30 to 16:30 - we need to start promptly

• Staff are to avoid using public transport to get to the venue

• Staff to have a clear lateral flow test result within 48hrs of attendance

• Staff to have temperatures taken on arrival and asked to sign that they have no symptoms of Covid 19 – anyone with a temperature above 37.8 will be sent home and advised to seek medical advice.

• There will be a hand sanitising station by the door, which all will need to use each time they enter the hut. Hand washing facilities are also available

• Face masks will be worn while in the building

• The site at Bushy Wood is now one way, toilets will be ladled for the groups use only

• The venue will be well ventilated so participants need to bring warm clothing – it will be cold!

• Seating will be 2 meters apart for theory

• Participants will need to bring their own food and drinks for the Day as we are not permitted to share facilities

• Participants will be required to bring and put on a freshly laundered top prior to physical training

• Participants will be put into groups for physical training and will not be able to swap

• Participants will be required to wear clinical grade masks for the physical training

• Gloves and shields will be available



Clinical grade face mask

A freshly laundered top prior to physical training suitable for close physical contact and which you do not mind being pulled

Closed, flat footwear that you are able to move around in, for example trainers

Waterproof footwear/wellington boots during the winter months or if it has been raining heavily.


REFRESHMENTS: Participants will need to bring their own food and drinks for the day as we are not permitted to share facilities
