Course description

East Sussex Children’s Service and the East Sussex Safeguarding Children Partnership (ESSCP) has set an expectation that the named safeguarding link governors attend, prior to or shortly after appointment, in-depth face to face training delivered by the East Sussex Governor and Clerking Services which will be updated every three years.

This session will provide safeguarding link governors with a refresher of the knowledge of how to work effectively with the school’s designated safeguarding lead (DSL) and ensure the governing body's responsibilities are being met.

Training objectives
The course is designed to be interactive with a mixture of presentation and group discussion to update governors on current changes and provide practical solutions to monitoring and reporting on the school's safeguarding responsibilities, including using the East Sussex safeguarding link governors’ checklist.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the refresher course it is anticipated that safeguarding link governors will:

  • Know the key aspects of monitoring responsibilities of the governing board

  • Understand the benefits and effectiveness of a safeguarding link governor’s checklist

  • Have a practical approach planned to work effectively with the school's DSL

  • Have a practical approach to reporting outcomes to the governing board
