This workshop looks at the skills needed by managers to get the most from these discussions, including how to tackle poor performance and how to further motivate high performers.

It will consist of 2 x half day, interactive, virtual classroom sessions, spaced 1 week apart. The course will use a case study to explore specific issues, particularly around dealing with staff who are struggling to perform well.

Each session will have trainer input, group work discussion and practice.

After day one, delegates will plan actions that they will undertake between day one and day two.

It is essential that you complete the "Maximising Performance" eLearning module prior to attending this workshop.

Any specific questions regarding supervision and appraisal can be sent to the trainer up to five days before the course, to help contextualise the sessions. Please familiarise yourself with the Supervision intranet pages prior to attending

The course will cover:

• A BRIEF RECAP on ESCC Supervision and Appraisal, using the Maximising Performance process


• How to set objectives and communicate expectations clearly so that staff can manage themselves


• The principles behind effective feedback, both on positive behaviour and on areas of concern

By the end of the course delegates will:

• know the new approach to line manager supervision and appraisal how these can be used to raise performance


• understand the principles of coaching for high performance


• use proven models for setting objectives and giving feedback


• identify an action plan for what steps they need to take in order to fully embed the new process
