Course description
This course supports practitioners to work with families where children may experience neglect.

Important note: It is essential that you have undertaken the Safeguarding Children e-learning prior to coming on this course (see additional information under full details), or you may be turned away.
Training objectives


Learning outcomes

The aims of this course are to help delegates to:

  • explore their understanding of what constitutes neglect

  • reflect on their current/historic neglect cases and share experience and learning

  • gain an overview of current research in relation to child neglect

  • practice raising difficult and sensitive issues regarding neglect with parents through a case study and role play

  • explore a range of tools to determine the standard of parental care

  • assess parental capacity and willingness to recognise and reduce the impact of neglect on their child(ren).

Preparation and Follow Up
Before attending any LSCB training course, participants must attend a Basic Signs and Indicators Child Protection course provided/commissioned by their own organisation or have accessed the Safeguarding Children online e-learning training course. To complete this course go to the e-learning section on the East Sussex Learning Portal, enter the Children’s Workforce channel and click Safeguarding.

Please familiarise yourself with the attached Neglect Toolkit and Matrix prior to attending the course, download and bring a copies
to the training.
