Course description

This session will help participants to understand how to work with Gypsy and Traveller children, young people and families. This will include information and guidance, and identify sources of support within the department to help improve understanding of the specific needs of Gypsy and Traveller families. It will include strategies to use to improve involvement in services, in order to improve outcomes for this group of people.

Important note: It is essential that you have undertaken the Safeguarding Children e-learning prior to coming on this course (see additional information under full details), or you may be turned away.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • understand there are different Gypsy, Roma,Traveller (GRT) groups

  • understand why GRT pupils are vulnerable

  • know a variety of strategies to support GRT pupils

  • be aware of the culture of GRT pupils in East Sussex

  • be aware of good practice.

Preparation and Follow Up
Before attending any LSCB training course, participants must attend a Basic Signs and Indicators Child Protection course provided/commissioned by their own organisation or have accessed the Safeguarding Children online e-learning training course. To complete this course go to the e-learning section on the East Sussex Learning Portal, enter the Children’s Workforce channel and click Safeguarding.

Refreshments are provided however lunch is not.
