Course description

This course aims to increase participant’s understanding, skills and knowledge when working with parental substance and alcohol use. This course will benefit staff from Children's Services (Social Care and Education), Health, Community Mental Health Team & Youth Offending Team, who are working with children & families or with adults who have children & may be involved in making and/or receiving referrals regarding child care and child protection issues.

Important note: It is essential that you have undertaken the Safeguarding Children eLearning and the Alcohol and Drugs foundation (Modules 1 & 2) eLearning prior to coming on this course (see additional information under full details), or you may be turned away.

Training objectives

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • be aware of their own attitudes to substance and alcohol use and users, and how this influences their practice

  • demonstrate increased knowledge of effects, risks and potential harm of the principle substances of use/misuse and drinking patterns

  • describe potential impact of harmful substance/alcohol use on children and families

  • assess needs and provide a range of responses directed both at assisting parents and protecting and helping children.

A maximum of three representatives from each team may have a confirmed place and further bookings will be put on a wait list.
Preparation and Follow Up 
Before attending any LSCB training course, participants must attend a Basic Signs and Indicators Child Protection course provided/commissioned by their own organisation or have accessed the Safeguarding Children online eLearning training course.

Participants MUST have also completed both of the eLearning modules:

  • Alcohol and drugs foundation - basic awareness: working with children, young people and families – module 1
  • Alcohol and drugs foundation - basic awareness: working with children, young people and families – module 2

To access and complete the eLearning courses, you must go to the eLearning section on the East Sussex Learning Portal and enter the Children's Workforce channel. The tutor will hold the right to turn away delegates who have not completed the required training.

Refreshments are provided, however lunch is not.
