Course description

This half-day multi-agency training is for clinicians, health and social care professionals and all practitioners who are required to conduct or contribute to mental capacity assessments and make best interest decisions in complex cases.


The course is designed to supplement existing Mental Capacity Act training. Participants should have a good awareness of the Mental Capacity Act and have completed basic awareness training.


It is a participative course involving multi-agency discussion of case studies and is aimed at learning through problem-solving and discussion.


 


 

Training objectives

To develop understanding of, and confidence in applying, a multi-agency approach to managing issues involving the Mental Capacity Act in complex cases including:



  • How a multi-agency approach can assist with best interests decisions

  • How disputes around mental capacity and best interests can be resolved

  • The role of the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) and the Court of Protection (COP).

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course it is anticipated that participants will have:



  • Increased confidence in applying a multi-agency approach

  • Increased knowledge of the role of the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) and the Court of Protection (COP) and how to make referrals

  • Knowledge of the multi-agency Mental Capacity Act Policy & Procedures.
